Old Settlers - New and Improved

We played the "New and Improved" Old Settlers course in Round Rock this morning.  It has been over four years since we've played this course and they recently redesigned it.  I think it is much improved.  Today's players were:  Steve, Lif, Dave, Bob, Keith, Chris and Heady.  Temperatures were in the 50's when we started, the sun was shining but there was a 10-20mph north wind blowing.

We had a hard time getting into the park, all the entrances were blocked  because of a marathon event.  We met up at the old disc golf course and discussed our options over some Macho Tacos that Steve provided.  After a couple of unsuccessful attempts, we finally found a way to access the course behind the Dell Diamond.  We spotted a familiar vehicle, Grateful Ted's Carpet Cleaning, we've seen this guy at several courses around town.

The old course was comprise mainly of long open holes, the new course is much more technical with tight tunnel shots and elevation changes.  Water can come into play on a couple of holes.  The first few holes are located where some of the old holes were, so there still are some wide open throws.  Then it changes to a heavily wooded area which requires some accurate throws.  Overall, we liked it a lot and plan to add this course to our rotation.  It will be interesting to see what it looks like in the summer.

I had some good drives today but I got hung up in the rough a lot and hit several trees.  I don't recall missing any putts.  Keith had an adventure on hole two after a birdie attempt went long as well as several other attempts.  However, Keith did record the only birdie for the day.  Chris had a little trouble with his control at first, but later in the round he discovered that he could throw a flick with accuracy.  Not bad for the first time out in less than ideal conditions.

No discs lost and no discs found.

Austin Ridge Bible Church - Boxing Day

A few of us were off work today, so we took advantage of the nice weather to see what shape the course at the Austin Ridge Bible Church was in.  Today's players were:  Steve, Lif and Heady.  Skies were mostly cloudy, temperatures were in the 70's and there was no wind.  We had the entire course to ourselves.  Course conditions were about the same as the last time we played it April.  Holes 13 and 14 were still disabled.  Much of the rough has died off but the fairways got a little tighter.  Christmas mulligans were in effect.  With a little bit of maintenance, this could be a premier course again.

I started off badly but I improved on the back nine.  My drives were better today than they were on Sunday, I was pleased with my approach shots but I did miss a couple of putts, including a par putts  on the easy #6 and the difficult #4.  Steve and I both had ace runs on #6, his went about 30 feet past the basket.

Only five birdies were made:  Steve(3) and Heady(2).  No discs lost and no discs found.

Zilker Park - First Game of the Winter

We played Zilker Park on Sunday for the first game(s) of the winter.  The players were:  Steve, Dave, Bob, Keith and Heady.   Lif was attending to some domestic issues.  It was a chilly start with temperatures in the 30's and fog in the area.  The fog burned off after about an hour and it turned out to be a nice day.  So nice, we played two!

Course condition were good, the grass was recently mowed and it was not muddy.  There were not very many players on the course when we started at 9:00.

I played well the first round and I played well the front 9 of the second round.  Then the wheels came off, including a disaster on #11.   I was having problems with my drives all day but was able to recover with some nice approach shots and putting.  Steve was still a little sore from his hip injury last week but he had a very nice second round scoring 4 under par.

Lots of birdies, too many to list.  No discs lost and no discs found.
